The Aviator's Lady (Ladies of the Wilderness, #3) by Gabrielle Meyer

The Aviator's Lady (Ladies of the Wilderness, #3)
ABOUT THE BOOK

Two Generations. One destiny.

In 1863, Matthew Merrick is desperate to prove to the world that he isn’t a mistake. Sent to the untamed Minnesota wilderness to oversee a pivotal land treaty, he finds his resolve tested—and his heart captured—by the daughter of an Ojibwe chief. But when his ambitions clash with those of Jacob Bailey, a fierce rival determined to shape his own fate, both men are drawn into a web of choices that will echo for decades...

Half a century later in 1917, the world is at war, but for stunt pilot Cade Bailey, the true battle is at home. Haunted by the mistakes of his past, he returns to northern Minnesota—not just to save his family’s struggling farm, but to find redemption in the wilderness he loves. Heiress Emma Merrick has wealth and privilege—but the freedom she longs for remains out of reach. Bound by family secrets and unyielding expectations, she jeopardizes everything to be a Red Cross nurse on the homefront, and dreams of learning to fly to bring aid to her patients.

When Cade’s reckless courage collides with Emma’s fierce determination, neither will be the same. But as their families’ secrets unravel, and the choices of their ancestors return to haunt them, they will be swept into a whirlwind of consequences that neither can escape, risking everything to chart their own course.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Wow! This is another example of Gabrielle Meyer's masterful storytelling! The Aviator's Lady is the third book in The Ladies of the Wilderness series, and it's now my favorite of the three. This dual timeline story spans the periods of 1863 and 1917, as the Bailey and Merrick families navigate perilous journeys. Cade Bailey and Emma Merrick share a beautiful connection in 1917, until the hurdles appear insurmountable and happy endings don't seem possible. Discouraging, yes, but even more troubling when it appears that many of the problems were instigated in 1863 by Emma's grandfather, Matthew. Meyers. His story is a powerful reminder that bad choices can lead to devastating consequences many years later.

I loved the history that is shared in this book. Matthew's actions regarding land treaties with the Indians set the stage for the hurtful circumstances that filter down to Emma and Cade as they face the reality of World War 1. Meyer shares in her author's notes the fictional liberties she chose in weaving fiction with fact. The results? Pure magic!

This book has something for everyone: riveting history, sweet but swoony romance, and an inspirational thread that is powerful without being overpowering! Tissues were often needed, and the epilogue was everything I could have hoped for! I highly recommend The Aviator's Lady to all who enjoy historical Christian romance.

I received a complimentary ARC. There was no obligation for a positive review.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A Song in the Dark by Kimberley Woodhouse

A Song in the Dark
ABOUT THE BOOK

Against the simmering backdrop of the impending WWII, blind virtuoso pianist Chaisley Frappier embarks on a concert tour through a rapidly changing Europe despite the dangers. When she learns that Hitler's escalating regime of injustice is targeting other disabled people, Chaisley realizes she is in a prime position to help those who are threatened reach safety. But the Führer's growing fascination with the celebrated musician endangers her undercover mission and forces her to walk a tightrope between her fame and her calling.

When Rick Zimmerman receives his next assignment from the British Secret Intelligence Service, he's surprised to learn he'll be acting as the personal driver of a world-renowned pianist as she traverses Europe. The role gives him the perfect cover to complete side missions of sabotage and intelligence-gathering, but he soon suspects the brilliant, alluring pianist has secrets of her own. As Chaisley and Rick confront evil at every turn, it will take every bit of faith and courage they possess to triumph over hate--and survive.

Bestselling author Kimberley Woodhouse crafts a stirring story of fighting for hope, love, and justice amid the tumultuous European continent on the brink of war.

MY THOUGHTS.....

This book is set during the years leading up to World War II, a time when the world shuddered at the mention of Germany and its leader. People were targeted for both their religious beliefs and their disabilities, and it appeared that there was no end to the horror. Kimberley Woodhouse states that this book has been in her mind for two decades, and the research for it made it the most challenging book she'd ever written. I assure you, her efforts were not in vain! I consider A Song in the Dark one of her best books, and the subject matter is as thought-provoking today as it was in 1938. Do we stand by and allow ugliness to overtake our world when a select few are targeted by evil? Can we overcome our complacency, stand up for what is right, and help all of our fellow men?

Amazing characters, a page-turning plot, and a satisfying ending would ordinarily make this a good book, but the faith element and social relevance made it an exceptional read! Chaisley isn't just a renowned pianist who is blind; she is also a genuinely good person who wants to offer light and encouragement to her European fans. Rick isn't just patriotic and courageous; he is also determined to make the world a safer and better place. It isn't surprising that they are drawn to each other, but will they become targets of the evil they are trying to fight?

A Song in the Dark
is filled with powerful emotions, dangerous adventure, and infinite inspiration. It is one of my favorite books of the year, and I'll be shocked if there aren't major book awards in its future. I highly recommend it to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.

I received a copy from the author, publisher, and NetGalley. There was no obligation for a positive review.

A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro by Heather Norman Smith

A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro
ABOUT THE BOOK

A small dose of kindness can go a long way

Andy Clark has always been different. But it isn't just the tumorous mass covering half his face that sets him apart—it's his quiet kindness. As an anonymous do-gooder in Flatsboro, North Carolina, Andy lives out what his mama taught him, even though she's no longer there.

Della Rose Miller, a well-known former beauty queen, escapes her crumbling marriage to arrogant Wade Miller and moves back to her hometown in hopes of finding reprieve. She and her daughter settle into a little Flatsboro apartment and quickly learn that they’re in the same complex as a childhood classmate whose heart Della Rose broke in third grade.

With her life turned upside down, Della Rose is uneasy about starting fresh, but when unassuming Andy turns his generosity toward her daughter, an unlikely friendship rekindles. When a heroic act suddenly pushes Andy into the spotlight, he risks his anonymity and quiet day-to-day habits to stand up for what's right.

As Della Rose navigates the end of her marriage and Andy continues his secret philanthropy, they navigate grief and trusting God. Heather Norman Smith weaves a charming and heartwarming Southern story to remind you of the power of simple kindness.

"Readers seeking a touching story of faith and redemption won’t be able to resist the heartwarming friendship at the novel’s center. It’s a tender ode to small-town morals and second chances."

MY THOUGHTS.....

The intriguing title and charming cover captured my attention and the author's name sealed the deal! I've come to expect fantastic reading from Heather Norman Smith, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro is a heartwarming story with endearing characters, a setting that mirrors my small hometown, and issues that are so relevant in today's troubled society. Andy Clark may have been disadvantaged by having only one good eye, but he had a way of seeing what others usually missed. He hadn't always been treated kindly in Flatsboro, but he still considered most of its people to be kind. Would his caring nature be the antidote for Della Rose's troubled return to Flatsboro?

Struggles and heartaches. Forgiveness, redemption, and second chances. This engaging story made me want to live in Flatsboro, North Carolina, exhibit Andy's goodness, and offer encouragement like his late mother, Gloria. The journal entries from Gloria are filled with love and faith, and there couldn't be a sweeter ending. Hand me the tissues, please! I highly recommend A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro to all who enjoy inspirational Southern fiction.

I received a complimentary ARC from the author and Kregel Books via NetGalley. There was no obligation for a positive review.

Once Upon a Christmas Carol by Melody Carlson

Once Upon a Christmas Carol
ABOUT THE BOOK

Can a tropical escape from holiday blues turn her Christmas into a snowy wonderland filled with joy and cheer?

Carol Langstrom hates Christmas. Growing up in a dysfunctional home, with a birthday on December 25 and too many dashed childhood expectations, the holiday season is something she would rather avoid. And working in the design industry where she manages seasonal decor for wealthy, entitled clients certainly hasn't helped!

So, this year her goal is to flee to the Bahamas--by herself--bah humbug! But bad weather and God's radically different plan redirect her flight to blustery Michigan, where she gets stuck on her aunt's farm and discovers a different kind of Christmas--one wrapped in love, family, and holiday spirit.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Carol Langstrom had grown to hate Christmas, and her aversion always made December 26th the best day of her Christmas season! And then, an unexpected change in plans offered her a glimpse of a celebration filled with amazing food, Christmas carols, and being part of a loving family. Had Carol finally discovered what others had always known?

I loved watching Carol bond with an aunt she'd never known, and her introduction to Aunt Maria's amazing neighbor had me laughing out loud. I always look forward to a new Christmas story by Melody Carlson, and this book didn't disappoint. It has all of the "Hallmark vibes", including intriguing characters, a wonderful small-town setting, and the excitement of preparing for the holidays. Throw in sweet romance and unexpected blessings, and the result is a Christmas novella to treasure! I thoroughly enjoyed Once Upon a Christmas Carol!

I received a complimentary digital copy from the author, but I also purchased my own print copy. There was no obligation for a positive review.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First Comes Marriage...Then Comes Murder (Women of Wynton's Mystery, #2) by Donna Mumma

First Comes Marriage...Then Comes Murder (Women of Wynton's Mystery)
ABOUT THE BOOK

Vivien's Bridal Creations Found at Murder Scenes

Mid-century glam meets murder mayhem in a series of cozy mysteries at Wynton's Department Store.

It is 1956 in Levi City, Florida. Vivien Sheffield, renowned bridal gown designer and consultant for Wynton's Department Store, is facing the greatest challenge of her career. Someone has been killing brides who wore one of her custom gowns in their wedding! Vivien's fellow employees and close friends--Audrey, Mary Jo, and Gigi--and her assistant Mirette spring into action to save Miss Vivien and the young brides of Levy City before the murderer succeeds at destroying Vivien's business at Wynton's. . .and her reputation.

MY THOUGHTS.....

I loved another chance to spend time with the women at Wynton's Department store! This second book in the Women of Wynton's Mystery series allowed me to learn more about the personal lives of Miss Vivian, Audrey, Mary Jo, Gigi, and Mirette, as they worked to solve a troubling mystery. Why were brides around Levy City being murdered, and why were the clues pointing to Miss Vivian? Who was trying to ruin her bridal business?

Author Donna Mumma guided me on a trip down memory lane, back to 1956, with mentions of department stores, fashionable attire, popular movies, and TV shows of that period. Most of all, I enjoyed the well-defined characters and the special friendship that these women shared, along with their efforts to find the killer and prevent more damage to Miss Vivian's reputation.

If you enjoy mystery, history, and characters you'd love to have as friends, grab a copy of First Comes Marriage...Then Comes Murder. I look forward to more of Mumma's stories!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

A Visit with Award-Winning Author Erica Vetsch!

I'm so excited to have a best-selling, award-winning author as my guest today!  Erica Vetsch's historical fiction is always top-notch, and her latest novel is no exception. A Scheming in Parliament is a fantastic read!

Erica, welcome to my blog!

Thank you, Connie, for letting me come visit with your readers! I really appreciate it. (Connie was kind enough to join my launch team for my latest release, A Scheming in Parliament.)

ASiP as I call it for short, is set in England during the Regency Era. The Regency Era dates from 1810-1820, when King George III was deemed incapable of ruling due to health issues, and his son, the future King George IV, stepped in to be his Regent, ruling in his stead.

One of the most easily identifiable indicators of whether something is Regency or not is women’s fashions. Dress styles changed dramatically around the Regency. Gone were the stomachers, panniers, and high, powdered wigs. Instead, fashion followed a neo-classical path inspired by ancient Greek and Rome.

Women wore their hair naturally, with braids, clustered curls, and shorter bangs/fringes over the forehead.

Their gowns changed to include an Empire (or if you wanted to be high-toned you would use the French pronunciation of Ohm-peer) waistline and flowing skirts that elongated the body and hid the waist and hips.

The Empire waistline takes its name from Empress Josephine, of France, who first modeled the style. As with many fashions in Regency England, anything done in the French court quickly crossed the channel and became an absolute necessity for Regency women.

Regency fashions enjoyed an interesting period between early Georgian styles which were elaborate and unwieldly and those of the Victorian Era where it seemed the bigger your hoopskirts the better.

I have sewn two different Regency gowns, and they are very comfortable to wear. Would you like to see this style make a comeback?

When I was a teenager, I actually had a couple of Empire-style dresses. They weren't long gowns, but I remember how special those dresses made me feel!

I loved learning about the fashion during this period. Now let's talk about Philippa and Sir Bertrand!

ABOUT THE BOOK

"Vetsch keeps the stakes high and the plot twists frequent . . . Readers will have a hard time putting this down."

—Publishers Weekly

Evil is masquerading in the halls of Parliament, and Sir Bertrand Thorndike is tasked with investigating from the inside. With his new position as a member of the House of Commons, he has access to the power brokers of English government. His tactic is to listen and learn, careful not to reveal his true motives, and he’s quickly inducted into the mysterious Theban Club.

Miss Philippa Cashel's mission, the Princess Charlotte Eleos School for Women in Need, is thriving with donations, and the students are learning skills to help them earn their livings in honorable ways. But when a dear friend's past is revealed by blackmail, Philippa must wrestle with the question, Is it ever right to do the wrong thing?

Bertie's and Philippa's missions collide when Bertie uncovers a dangerous plot involving vulnerable women. He and Philippa join forces against the corruption threatening to topple England's government, all while navigating their outward reputations and inward feelings for each other.

MY THOUGHTS.....

"Is it ever right to do the wrong thing?" This is a question we've all pondered, and it's a major theme explored in Erica Vetsch's new book, A Scheming in Parliament. Set in London, in 1816, this story revolves around corruption in the English Parliament and the newly appointed member of the House of Commons who is determined to correct it.

This page-turner is filled with adventure, mystery, and inspiration. I loved the spiritual themes that are woven throughout the story: praying for answers, understanding that we may have to wait for His answers, and recognizing that God will forgive anyone!

Talk about endearing characters! Aunt Dolly, Marcus, Charlotte, and of course, Philippa and Bertie! Philippa Cashel believes that her relationship with Sir Bertrand Thorndike is only a working partnership, but it doesn't take long to recognize that there's so much more! Romance? Oh, it's there and it's sweet! Bertie & Philippa experience the best kind...a slow burn that could easily burst into flame! Will we see it happen?

I loved the reunion with characters we've met before in this second book of the Of Cloaks & Daggers series. My only complaint? Wondering how long I have to wait for another visit to the Haverly Universe!

I highly recommend 'A Scheming in Parliament' to all who enjoy inspirational Regency romance!
