Every Dog Has His Day (Gone to the Dogs #5) by Janice Thompson

Every Dog Has His Day (Gone to the Dogs #5)
ABOUT THE BOOK

A Large Reward Is Offered for a Missing Dog

Kick back with your faithful companion and relax with a small-town mystery in book 5 of the Gone to the Dogs series.

Lone Star groomer, Triniti Nelson, adopts a feisty rescued dachshund, and the two are inseparable. . .until Texans quarterback, Corey Wallis, announces a large reward for his missing female dachshund. Suddenly all of Houston are on the lookout for the MIA pooch that bares a strong resemblance to Triniti’s new pup. Triniti contacts Corey, but soon Ginger goes missing and Triniti is convinced Corey and his agent took her for a publicity stunt. Then there is a reporter who could be trying to manufacture a great story or a cameraman seeking the big reward. Can there be a happy ending for Ginger?

MY THOUGHTS.....

Give me a story with pets, mystery, and a little romance and I'm a happy reader! Every Dog Has His Day is the fifth book in the Gone to the Dogs Mysteries series and it's just as entertaining as the previous stories. This is a fun reunion with some of the interesting, and sometimes quirky, characters from the previous books, including Grandma Peach, legendary country music star Trina, and many of the staff members from the Lone Star Vet Clinic. This time they're involved in an enjoyable tale with some puzzling twists and turns, an adorable dachshund that becomes an unlikely matchmaker, and some sweet romance just waiting to happen!

Author Janice Thompson once again proves her ability to captivate readers while avoiding the use of explicit or graphic content. Every Dog Has His Day is a perfect read for those who want intrigue and romance. Fans of cozy mysteries will love it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review. I am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MY THOUGHTS.....

"Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverts 22:6

I love devotionals and I'm thrilled to find one that can be shared with my nine-year-old granddaughter. God's Word for Families Vol. 1 offers 365 devotional activities, using 52 different passages from God's Word, that can be explored throughout the 52 weeks of the year. It begins with Who Made the World? (Genesis 1:2-7) and ends with God's Word is My Sword (Hebrews 4:12-16)  There are life lessons, fun facts, song suggestions, discussion prompts, family projects, and bonus activities. Literally something for every member of the family and each devotion requires only ten minutes of your time. Ten minutes that can help each member of your entire family to grow in their relationship with each other and with God!

I like that the scripture is from the King James Version but there's also a paraphrased version to help children understand it better!

What better fun fact than a map that shows the country of Ethiopia?!?!

This is an attractive book, with a hardback cover, colorful pictures and illustrations, and easy-to-read text. I recommend God's Word for Families Vol.1 to all who are wanting to create a meaningful family worship time.

Defending the Witness by Sharee Stover

Defending the Witness (Love Inspired Suspense)
ABOUT THE BOOK

To catch a killer…

She must trust her protectors.

After witnessing a murder at the hands of a notorious gang leader, Ayla DuPree is a marked woman sent straight to witness protection. But when her handler is killed and her safety compromised, she has no choice but to run—forcing US Marshal Chance Tavalla and his K-9 to chase her. Can Chance keep Ayla alive long enough to find safety and justice?

MY THOUGHTS.....

Wave maker. The List. These seemingly innocent phrases become keys to a thrilling race to find answers and I was quickly plunged into a world of criminal gangs, innocent victims, and the need for witness protection programs. Defending the Witness is a compelling new suspense novel from author Sharee Stover and it's also a tribute to the faithful K-9 defenders who are so vital in stopping criminal activity.

Likable characters, sweet romance, and a strong faith message add to this book's appeal, and the twists, turns, and non-ending suspense make it a totally satisfying read. Grab a copy of Defending the Witness if you're a fan of romantic Christian suspense...you won't be disappointed!!

Cherishing the Cowgirl (Colorado Cowgirls, #2) by Jody Hedlund

Cherishing the Cowgirl (Colorado Cowgirls, #2)
ABOUT THE BOOK

Charity Courtney is at her wit’s end trying to save her boardinghouse from a bank foreclosure. Short of money but not short of marriage proposals, she dreads putting aside her fairy tale dreams of love and having to settle for a marriage of convenience. But with the need to provide for her two younger sisters, she doesn’t have any other options.

While visiting Fairplay, wealthy railroad magnet Hudson Vanderwater hears of Charity’s plight. Although he comes across as cold and calloused, he is drawn to helping women in need because of a tragedy that destroyed his sister. He concocts a plan that will save Charity—he’ll employ her and rent her boardinghouse for the month and in doing so alleviate her debt.

With a grumpy and demanding new boarder who is now her boss, Charity determines to hold the handsome Hudson at arm’s length. But she’s the sunshine for his stormy soul, and he can’t resist being drawn to her. As danger closes in and threatens to destroy Charity, he’ll stop at nothing to save her.

“This one’s worth rounding up.” —Booklist, on Falling for the Cowgirl

*All of the books in the Colorado Cowgirls series are sweet, closed-door romances with plenty of sizzle. The inspirational themes are light, and romance is the main focus of the books.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Are you ready for a story that captures your heart and stirs your imagination? Who else but Jody Hedlund could pair a young woman raised by Quaker parents with a sophisticated businessman from Baltimore and give them a romance that is both sigh-laden and swoon-worthy? Charity Courtney's initial introduction to Hudson Boylston Vanderwater III involves her rescuing him from an angry moose and this laugh-out-loud moment helps lighten an adventure that's filled with murder, kidnapping, robbery, and downright devious villains! This moose rescue also sets the stage for an amazing attraction that's just begging to be explored!

Cherishing the Cowgirl is an exciting Western story that features intriguing characters, a tantalizing romance, and a nod to the poor girl/rich man scenario. It's also a captivating introduction to Charity's two sisters, Patience and Felicity, who are set to be the next two Colorado Cowgirls. So, grab a copy of Cherishing the Cowgirl, settle back in your favorite reading spot, and prepare to be swept away. This book is a perfect addition to summer reading lists, and I especially recommend it to all who enjoy historical Western romance.

Deadly Sanctuary (Mountain Protectors Novel #3)
ABOUT THE BOOK

Years ago, journalist- Emery Bishop survived the unthinkable. Now the single mother is heading home to her grandparent’s bed and breakfast in Kentucky to seek sanctuary. With a dark past looming all around her, Hickory Cove is the one place Emery has always felt safe. Only this time, Emery finds herself the center of attention she doesn’t know how to protect herself from.

Corbin Peachy is the local game warden. Protecting nature is his calling and leaves a man little time for romance. But he is instantly drawn to the guarded journalist. Corbin’s protective nature wants to help her, but can his patience tear down the walls Emery has built all around her or will a string of recent murders send her running again.

Emery has to decide if she is willing to trust the local game warden with more than just her heart.

MY THOUGHTS.....

The Hickory Cove Bed and Breakfast. Just the name suggests a peaceful sanctuary, a place to enjoy beauty and harmony in a beautiful Kentucky setting. Until...this tranquil setting becomes a place of fear, danger, and even death. Mindy Steele shares another nail-biting thriller that kept me totally absorbed in the peril that surrounds Emery Bishop and her 10-year-old son Cooper. Can an 'Amish plowboy turned wildlife defender' save Emery from becoming her ex-husband's victim once again?

Steele is a respected author of Amish fiction but she's stepped out of her comfort zone once again in this third addition to her Mountain Protectors novels. Yes, there are some heavy topics but they are mentioned in a respectful manner and romance lovers will enjoy seeing the friendship that develops between Emery and Corbin. Could a deeper relationship be possible? Deadly Sanctuary is an exciting character-driven story that kept me turning the pages. I recommend it to all who enjoy romantic suspense novels.

Refuge for the Archaeologist (Harbored in Crow's Nest, #2) by Danielle Grandinetti

Refuge for the Archaeologist (Harbored in Crow's Nest, #2)
ABOUT THE BOOK

Will uncovering the truth set them free or destroy what they hold most dear?

Wisconsin, 1930—With her health in shambles and her archaeological career on the line, Cora Davis retreats to Crow’s Nest and the home of her great aunt to heal. She doesn’t think much of the missing memories from between the earthquake that caused her dizzy spells and her trip home. Until she begins remembering the danger that sent her fleeing her last dig and the person responsible.

After a decade as a ranch hand, Silas Ward returned to Crow’s Nest to provide for the women in his life. That same protective instinct propels him to Cora’s aid. But when finances dwindle, the lies and greed of others threaten to ruin his family. Unless Silas can walk the thin line of compromise. A choice that might cost him Cora’s affection.

As winter’s chill threatens, will Crow’s Nest prove a refuge, or will both Cora and Silas have no choice but to sacrifice their chance at happiness to save those they love?

Welcome to Crow’s Nest, where danger and romance meet at the water’s edge.

MY THOUGHTS.....

History, mystery, and romance! An introduction to intriguing new characters and a reunion with some that we've already met! Author Danielle Grandinetti invites us back to Crow's Nest, Wisconsin and I'm so happy to return! The characters are appealing, the suspense kept me fully engaged, and there was also an inspiring faith element woven into the plot. What more could I ask for? How about an unlikely romance between a female archaeologist and a devoted son and uncle who longs to return to his work on a Western ranch? Is it possible for Cora and Silas to give up their dreams and settle instead for a future in Crow's Nest...together??

Refuge for the Archaeologist is a great addition to the Harbored in Crow's Nest series. It's the second book of the series but don't worry if you haven't read the first. Grandinetti shares background tidbits to help you understand what's occurred previously! I recommend this book to all who enjoy historical Christian romance.

Cold Pursuit (Ryland & St. Clair #1)
ABOUT THE BOOK

Needing a fresh start, she moves to St. Louis to be near her ailing mother and opens a private investigation firm with her friend and former FBI partner, Tony St. Clair. They're soon approached by a grieving mother who wants them to find out what happened to her teenaged son who disappeared four years ago. River knows there's almost no hope the boy is still alive, but his mother needs closure, and River and Tony need a case, no matter how cold it might be.

But as they follow the boy's trail, which gets more complicated at every turn, they find themselves in the path of a murderer determined to punish anyone who gets in his way. With her trademark blend of page-turning thrills and intricate plots, Nancy Mehl delivers a spine-tingling thriller that will keep readers up all night.

MY THOUGHTS.....

I've read several of this author's books and I'm always amazed with Nancy Mehl's ability to convey the workings of troubled minds! Cold Pursuit kept me fully engaged in the efforts to learn what really caused a teenager's disappearance several years ago. I loved watching the deepening friendship between former FBI partners River Ryland and Tony St. Clair. and I can only hope that a different relationship will be explored in the near future. This book has good versus evil. faltering faith versus deep belief, and a painful reminder that mental illness can trigger unimaginable acts. But, above all, Mehl offers the powerful affirmation that God is always with us!

If you're looking for a psychological thriller filled with twists, turns, intense danger, and unending suspense, grab a copy of Cold Pursuit today. It will have you turning the pages and keenly anticipating the second book in the Ryland & St. Clair series!

Committing to the Cowgirl (Colorado Cowgirls, #1) by Jody Hedlund

Committing to the Cowgirl (Colorado Cowgirls, #1)
ABOUT THE BOOK

After years away, Astrid Nilsson has returned home to Colorado, hoping to become Fairplay’s second doctor . . . and to find healing for her reoccurring consumption. Spirited and independent, Astrid doesn’t want her illness to be a burden to those she loves, so she has resisted getting serious about any man.

As the current doctor of Fairplay, Logan Steele is seeking to hire a male physician to take over his clinic after he goes back East. When Astrid, his childhood sweetheart, insists that she’s the one for the job, he offers her a bargain she can’t refuse: pretend to court him to appease his mother and he’ll give her the doctor position on a trial basis.

Astrid accepts the arrangement even though she’s reluctant to be in a sham relationship with a man who’d once broken her heart. She tries to keep herself from falling for Logan again but soon finds herself getting much more than she bargained for. With the clock ticking for both of them, can they commit to real love before it’s too late?

Pretend courtship
Fake engagement
Childhood sweethearts
Meddling mother
Co-workers in proximity
Bargain benefits both
“This one’s worth rounding up.” —Booklist, on Falling for the Cowgirl

*All of the books in the Colorado Cowgirls series are sweet, closed-door romances with plenty of sizzle. The inspirational themes are light, and the romance is the main focus of the books.

MY THOUGHTS.....

This isn't the first time that we've met Astrid Nillson but oh, how she's grown in her years away from Colorado! She's now a physician who's hoping to practice medicine in Fairplay but she has to convince the doubters who don't believe that women can be doctors! She also has to come to terms with the person who broke her heart so many years ago. Can she overcome her hurt and anger so that she can work with Dr. Logan Steele?

Committing to the Cowgirl is the beginning of a new series and it's another feather in Jody Hedlund's writing cap. I was fully engaged in this story which features a beautiful Western setting, family loyalties, and a second-chance romance. There are also intriguing references to an influenza epidemic and Astrid's own struggle with consumption that would have been so relevant in 1877. Throw in characters from the Colorado Cowboys series and mix in a sweet but sizzling romance and we're given a perfect addition to our summer reading! Best of all, there's the promise that book two in this Colorado Cowgirls series will be available in a few weeks. I recommend this book to all who enjoy historical romantic fiction.

I received an early copy from the author but there was no obligation of a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.

With Every Memory by Janine Rosche

With Every Memory
ABOUT THE BOOK

After a tragic accident robs her of the last nine years of memories, Lori Mendenhall comes home to a family completely different than she remembers. As her memory returns and past secrets resurface, it will take all of them to repair what's been broken and find a new future together.

MY THOUGHTS.....

This isn't a light, fluffy story that kept me happily reading but it is a captivating read that kept me turning the pages! Captivated by the writing talents of author Janine Rosche as she explores a family who seemed to have it all until an unthinkable tragedy occurred. Rosche tells this story through the POVs of a mother and daughter as they grapple with the loss of a son and twin brother. Lori's memory loss from a traumatic brain injury, her fight to recover, and her efforts to recall those memories are told along with the struggles of her teenage daughter, Avery. Avery hasn't just lost her twin, she's lost her family as it once was and she's also dealing with the challenges of first love! Lori's efforts to recall her lost memories bring to light so many truths that had been hidden. There's also a surprising revelation that totally changed my opinion of husband and father Michael!

With Every Memory is a novel of darkness and light, of despair and hope, of misconceptions and truth. It's also a compelling reminder that love can heal all hurts. I recommend it to all who enjoy contemporary women's fiction.

I received a copy from the publisher through Revell Reads. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

A Murder of Aspic Proportions (A Sunflower Café Mystery #2) by Amy Lillard

A Murder of Aspic Proportions (A Sunflower Café Mystery, #2)
ABOUT THE BOOK

Set in small-town Kansas, USA Today bestselling author Amy Lillard’s Sunshine Café Mystery series features a twenty-something advice columnist turned café manager and sleuth, her tiny dog with a big personality, farm-fresh produce—and murder!

Professional advice columnist turned café manager and amateur sleuth Sissy Yoder is adjusting to life in her parents’ small but not-so-sleepy former hometown of Yoder, Kansas, where family is plentiful, the tomatoes are “to die for”—and murder is often in season . . .

MY THOUGHTS.....

I can't decide what I like best about this book. Is it the murder mystery that needs to be solved, or the people who are trying to solve it? Sissy Yoder may have an Amish last name but her Amish experience has only been during the visits to her Amish relatives in Yoder, Kansas. How in the world has she ended up working for her Aunt Bethel at the Sunflower Cafe and living in a renovated Chicken Coop? So many questions to be answered and so many laughs along the way!

A Murder of Aspic Proportions is the second book in the Sunflower Cafe Mystery series but author Amy Lillard does a great job of filling in the background so that new readers never feel lost. I enjoyed the quirky characters, the cozy mystery, the subtle flirtation between Sissy and Gavin, and the interesting tidbits that advice columnist "Aunt Bess" offers at the beginning of each chapter. It was, however, the many laugh-out-loud moments that made this such an entertaining story. Lillard's signature humor makes this a perfect stress-relieving read and I recommend it to all who enjoy cozy mysteries.

I received an ARC from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Amy loves nothing more than a good book. Except for her family…and maybe homemade tacos…and nail polish. But reading and writing are definitely way up on the list.

Born and bred in Mississippi, Amy is a transplanted Southern Belle who now lives in Oklahoma with her deputy husband, their genius son, and three spoiled cats. ^..^

When she’s not creating happy endings, she has a variety of hobbies, but her favorite is whatever gets her out of housework.
