When the Meadow Blooms by Ann H. Gabhart

When the Meadow Blooms
ABOUT THE BOOK

If any place on God's earth was designed to help one heal, it is Meadowland. Surely here, at her brother-in-law's Kentucky farm, Rose and her daughters can recover from the events of the recent past--the loss of her husband during the 1918 influenza epidemic, her struggle with tuberculosis that required a stay at a sanatorium, and her girls' experience in an orphanage during her illness. At Meadowland, hope blooms as their past troubles become rich soil in which their faith can grow.
Dirk Meadows may have opened his home to his late brother's widow and her girls, but he keeps his heart tightly closed. The roots of his pain run deep, and the evidence of it is written across his face. Badly scarred by a fire and abandoned by the woman he loved, Dirk fiercely guards his heart from being hurt again. But it may be that his visitors will bring light back into his world and unlock the secret to true healing.

Bestselling author Ann H. Gabhart explores the tender places within the human heart in this character-driven story of trusting God to turn our burdens into something beautiful.

MY THOUGHTS.....

When the Meadow Blooms tells the heartwarming story of a mother and her two daughters who have been separated by illness for almost two years. Widowed Rose Meadows has spent the time being treated for tuberculosis in a Louisville, Kentucky sanitarium, and her daughters have lived in a home for children. Author Ann H. Gabhart paints a vivid picture of this painful separation and their efforts to be together again. Calla and her mother both reach out to Dirk Meadows for help, but he has allowed sorrow to isolate him from life. Will he answer their plea for help? Can he provide a sanctuary for his nieces and sister-in-law at the family farm, Meadowland?

Gabhart has created wonderful characters and written some of her best words ever! Nine-year-old Sienna is pure joy, but she often gets into trouble because of her innocence and her ability to get lost in observing nature. Fifteen-year-old Calla appears fearful and cautious, but she's had to be her sister's protector while they've been at the orphanage. Rose is a mother who is physically weak but fiercely strong in her determination to be with her daughters once again. And then, there's Dirk Meadows. A reclusive man who carries the burden of never getting over the loss of his true love.

When the Meadow Blooms offers a realistic picture of dealing with tuberculosis in 1925 Kentucky, and I was reminded of an episode from my own life. In the late 1950s, when I was still small, my great aunt spent over a year at a tuberculosis sanitarium in Paris, Kentucky, and my family often visited her on Sunday afternoons. Actually, my brother and I remained outdoors while my parents visited her, and I recall the feelings of uncertainty and fear that I experienced. TB was still a dreaded disease at that time, and enforced isolation was a given!

This is a touching story filled with so many emotions: uncertainty, fear, and separation, but it also shows the power of love and faith. I smiled, I cried, and I remembered, but I was left with so much joy! As the Meadow Blooms is a poignant 5-star read and it's one that will remain on the keeper shelf in my bookcase!

I received a copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Boulevard of Confusion (Spies of the Civil War #2) by Sandra Merville Hart

Boulevard of Confusion (Spies of the Civil War #2)
ABOUT THE BOOK

In times of war, is anything as it seems?

Her aunt’s invitation to Richmond is just the change Beatrice Swanson needs after her brother’s release from a Union prison. Bea’s father agrees to the trip with a condition—one that tosses her emotions into swirling confusion.

Though Jay Nickson wants to serve his country as a Confederate soldier, his work is too important to the government. Bea’s interest in his job, which includes secrets that would benefit the Union, arouses his suspicions. Is she spying for the North? His growing feelings for her are hard to squelch.

Though she participates in activities to benefit Confederate soldiers, Bea struggles with her own loyalties and her father’s demands. Where does her cousin, Meg, go on her solitary errands? Bea’s own growing love for Jay, a Southerner, only adds to her confusion. Tensions escalate in Richmond as the Union army approaches, drawing her into more secrecy. Where does her allegiance lie? And how will she be forced to prove it?

Nothing in war is simple…especially when the heart becomes entangled.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Boulevard of Confusion is the second book in the Spies of the Civil War series, and I've been transformed once again to a time when families were divided, loyalties were tested, and trust was hard to maintain. Author Sandra Merville Hart shares another exciting story about this traumatic period, and I was totally captivated by the intrigue and secrets surrounding Beatrice Swanson and her family. Were the Swansons loyal to the Union, or did they have sympathetic feelings for the Confederacy? Were some of them working undercover as spies?

It is 1862 when Beatrice leaves her home in Washington City to travel to Richmond, Virginia. It doesn't take long for an attraction to develop between her and a Confederate businessman, but how can they hope for anything more? A relationship between Beatrice and Jay might be considered treasonous, and their lives would be changed forever!

Hart successfully weaves romance and a strong faith element into this story, but the historical details are the 'icing on the cake'! I could feel the fear and uncertainty as the Union forces advanced toward Richmond and I could only imagine the mixed emotions of the Confederate soldiers as they were being treated by Union women. I was reminded of the importance of women during this war, and I never knew how many of them worked as spies! Boulevard of Confusion is a treasure trove for fans of historical fiction, and I look forward to the next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the author. There was no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.

Potiphar's Wife by Mesu Andrews

Potiphar's Wife
ABOUT THE BOOK

The drama of the Old Testament comes to life as one of the Bible's most infamous women longs for Joseph, her husband's servant, in this riveting novel from the award-winning author of Isaiah's Legacy.

Before she is Potiphar's wife, Zuleika is a king's daughter on the isle of Crete, where the sisterhood of women rules in the absence of their seafaring husbands. Now that she's come of age, Zuleika knows she will soon be betrothed. Her father believes his robust trade with Egypt will ensure Pharaoh's obligation to marry his daughter.

But Pharaoh refuses and gives her instead to Potiphar, the captain of his bodyguards--a crusty bachelor twice her age, who would rather have a new horse than a Minoan wife.

Abandoned by her father, rejected by Pharaoh, and humiliated by Potiphar's indifference, Zuleika years for affection. But when her obsession with Joseph, the Hebrew chamberlain with the face and body of the gods, goes terribly wrong, she discovers the truth: Only the God of Joseph can heal her wounded heart.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Joseph is a beloved character in the Bible, and I've long known that the lies of one woman caused many of the tragic circumstances in his life. The Holy Bible refers to this woman as Potiphar's wife, but now, she has a name! Zuleika is the name that author Mesu Andrews gives her, and this book has given me a new perspective of this deceitful woman.

Andrews is an acclaimed author of biblical fiction, and Potiphar's Wife is certainly another triumph for her. The combination of historical details and the author's imagination suggests an explanation for Zuleika's actions, and I was actually led to feel sympathy for this woman who was forced into a loveless marriage and betrayed by those around her. I was intrigued by the interaction between Potiphar and Joseph, the romance between Joseph and Zuleika's servant, Ahira, and Joseph's continuous rebuttal of Zully's advances. As I continued to read, I was reminded of several things. Zully's need for love and acceptance is universal, our lives are often determined by outside influences, but there is One who will never forsake us. Temptation is always present but acting on those temptations is our personal choice!

It's evident that Andrews devoted much time to research, and her storytelling kept me turning the pages to see if love and redemption were possible for this troubled, tragic woman. Potiphar's Wife is a must-read for all who enjoy biblical history!

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was absolutely no obligation for a favorable review. These are my unbiased thoughts.

The View from Coral Cove by Amy Clipston

The View from Coral Cove
ABOUT THE BOOK

When a jilted romance novelist escapes to a small beach town, the last thing she expected to find was the start of an even better love story.

In the wake of a broken engagement and the death of her last surviving family member, romance novelist Maya Reynolds moves to the haven of Coral Cove, North Carolina, to take over her great-aunt’s toy store. Some of her grief is immediately eased by imaginative eight-year-old Ashlyn Tanner, who talks her into adopting a kitten and inspires Maya to create a princess tea-party room in the store.

Ashlyn’s dad, local veterinarian Brody Tanner, is quickly smitten by the newest resident of his hometown. As a single parent, he sacrifices a lot in order to give Ashlyn the world, so a romantic entanglement with Maya is not a distraction he is looking for.

As the three develop a deepening bond in the seaside town where Maya experienced some of her happiest childhood memories, clouds cast a shadow over Maya’s hope for the future: an impossible deadline looms over her next novel, a long-held secret by her late mother about Maya’s absent father comes to light, and Brody’s resolve to avoid romance seems unbreakable.

But together, they just might discover that sometimes happy endings happen outside the pages of Maya’s novels too.

MY THOUGHTS.....

A disillusioned author, a commitment-shy single father, and a beautiful small-town setting are the promises of a great story but throw in an adorable little girl and a kitten, and you're guaranteed a winning read! In her newest book, Amy Clipston displays her special talent for creating characters we'd all like to know, placing them in realistic situations, and then helping them work their way to a happy ending. These are the keys to satisfying fans of contemporary romance, and The View from Coral Cove is definitely satisfying!

Clipston poignantly shares Maya Reynold's varying emotions as she faces grief and loneliness, and her uncertainty about finding her long-absent father. She also paints a vivid picture of Brody Tanner's reluctance to allow Maya into his heart. Their slowly developing attraction is a joy to savor, but it is the special connection between Maya and Brody's daughter that is especially touching! Who wouldn't love this little girl who is also hungry for a family?

If you're looking for a great beach read, grab a copy of The View from Coral Cove. It is a heartwarming story of friendship, hope, and a chance to begin again.

Scandal at Stonecroft (Sackets Harbor Mysteries #1) by Sandra Kay Vosburgh

Scandal at Stonecroft (Sackets Harbor Mysteries #1)
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Twenty years after the disappearance of the treasurer of Stonecroft Resort, an article appears in the Ontario Times, “Whatever Happened to Harold Ramsey?” reigniting Sackets Harbor with whispers, rumors, and gossip.

The townsfolk believe Ramsey embezzled funds and left town with Kate Darby. Blair Ramsey believes her husband is dead. Miss Ada Whittaker believes Felix Zohlar knows more than he’s telling,
and Felix Zohlar believes wealth and influence, like blood applied to Hebrew doorposts, will cause the hand of justice to pass over. Sheriff  Meriday believes Ada Whittaker should leave the investigation to him.

MY THOUGHTS.....

I've just discovered a new-to-me author with a new mystery series, and I couldn't be happier. Scandal at Stonecroft is the first book in the Sackets Harbor Mysteries series and I look forward to reading more adventures of Ada Whittaker, her secretary Gwen, and the other residents of Sackets Harbor. Author Sandra Kay Vosburgh has created a cast of characters who could be found in any small town, but a scandal that occurred twenty years ago threatens their peaceful existence. Will a letter written to Ada, who is also known as advice columnist Adrienne, offer the clues needed to solve the mystery? Will a twenty-year-old crime finally be solved?

Ada Whittaker is a unique character. I admired her commonsense approach to approaching the clues and developments in this case and I enjoyed her humorous interaction with her quirky secretary Gwen. I'm not sure how many of the supporting characters in this story will be present in the upcoming book that is scheduled for release in June 2022, but I'm eager to find out. If you enjoy likable characters, a plot with twists and turns to keep you guessing, and a strong faith element woven into an intriguing story, look no further. Scandal at Stonecroft is a delightful cozy mystery that you don't want to miss!

I voluntarily accepted a digital copy of this book from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Her Mountain Refuge by Laurel Blount

Her Mountain Refuge
ABOUT THE BOOK

Going home could mean risking her heart…

She needs help to start over…

But can she ever trust again?

Widowed, pregnant and under her controlling mother-in-law’s thumb, Charlotte Tremaine needs help—but she doesn’t expect it to come from her estranged childhood best friend. Yet after a fainting spell lands her in the hospital, Sheriff Logan Carter whisks her away to his foster mother’s mountain home to recover. But when her secrets follow, can she face her painful past with Logan at her side?

From Love Inspired: Uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Sometimes, going home is just what we need, and this is the case with Charlotte Tremaine. Home to Cedar Ridge, Georgia---the place where she first became friends with Logan Carter and his foster mother, Ruby. Now, it may be the place where she can escape her domineering mother-in-law and find a safe haven until her baby is born.

Oh, how I loved this story! Her Mountain Refuge covers so many relevant topics: spousal abuse, foster care, and trying to find your way when life seems overpowering. It is also, however, a sweet story of enduring friendship and the power of hope, with characters that you won't forget. Charlotte needs help, Logan is an amazing hero who's ready to sacrifice all, and then, there's Ruby. She may not have given birth to her foster children, but no mother has ever loved more! She's also a confirmed matchmaker in need of a new couple to unite!!!

Her Mountain Refuge is a lovely inspirational romance, and I can't wait to go back to Cedar Ridge, Georgia. I need to see what Ruby has in store for her other foster children. Great job, Laurel Blount!

Amish Cradle Conspiracy
ABOUT THE BOOK

From USA TODAY bestselling author Dana R. Lynn.

To protect an Amish community…She’ll make herself a target.

After a pregnant Amish woman and her toddler are abducted, police sergeant Nicole Dawson charges in to save them. But when the kidnapper escapes with the child—and thinks Nicole can identify him—she becomes his new obsession. Determined to protect his ex-fiancée, FBI special agent Jack Quinn joins the case. But the clock is ticking in their race to uncover the baby-trafficking ring before another innocent is taken…

From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Police sergeant Nicole Dawson and FBI agent Jack Quinn certainly aren't strangers, but they can't claim to be friends. When they join forces to find a missing Amish mother and her two-year-old daughter, old wounds and painful memories threaten their working partnership. How can Nicole forget her ex-fiancé's betrayal? What hope is there if you can't trust the man you once loved?

Author Dana R. Lynn sends readers on a thrilling, hair-raising adventure in Amish country, but this time there are kidnappers and baby-snatchers to further complicate matters. I always enjoy the interaction that she shows between the Amish and English communities and Lynn takes it to an even higher level in Amish Cradle Conspiracy. Wonderful characters, a second chance at love, and the reminder that forgiveness is essential are all combined to make this a fantastic romantic suspense novel!

Secrets Left Behind by Shannon Redmon

ABOUT THE BOOK

The more clues they uncover, the more deadly the investigation becomes.

After surviving several attempts on her life, Skye Anderson knows Detective Jake Reed’s suspicions of foul play about the accident that killed her husband must be true. Someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden—and all signs point to a drug ring Skye’s late husband was investigating. Can Jake keep Skye alive and identify the killers pursuing her?

From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith

MY THOUGHTS.....

This fast-paced story begins with an opening scene in a library that left me thankful that it had never happened to me during my years as a librarian! From that moment, until the end, I felt like I was on a thrilling roller coaster ride as I tried to figure out who was trying to harm Skye Anderson. What did she have that was worth killing for? Was it possible that her late husband's death wasn't an accident after all?

Secrets Left Behind is romantic suspense at its best, and Detective Jake Reed is the ideal hero. It's true that he broke Skye's heart many years ago but he's back, determined to protect her and also honor his late friend's memory. I was totally invested in this story, and I can't wait to read more of this author's books. Well done, Shannon Redmon!

The Victor: A Tale of Betrayal, Love, and Sacrifice by Marlayne Giron

The Victor
ABOUT THE BOOK

A benevolent king; his sword of power.
A ruthless traitor bent on revenge
and the faithful son who stands in his way
with the woman destined to share his throne.

Who shall emerge The Victor in this epic battle between good and evil to rule the lives of hapless men?

MY THOUGHTS.....

This is a deeply compelling story that will appeal to a wide range of readers. It is a medieval fantasy, rich in romance, and filled with Christian references, that is set during a time of knights, swords, and castles. Lucius is a rebellious knight who has been cast out of the kingdom of Eloith but he doesn't go quietly. Thus begins his desire for revenge with a campaign filled with lies, deception, and evil! Can he and his cohorts gain control and rule Eloith forever? Will Joshua, the King's son, be able to defend the kingdom and save the people from this evil rule?

Author Marlayne Giron admits that she was writing to grab the attention of teens, but adults will be just as fascinated with this book! Danger, adventure, and a sweet love story make it a story you don't want to miss, and I found myself eagerly turning the pages and highlighting passages that have hidden meanings. The Victor is an epic tale of good versus evil, and an allegory with characters that depict God, betrayal, and the sacrifice of Jesus. Believers already know the outcome of the ultimate battle between good and evil, and I can only hope that reading The Victor will convince others to want to learn more!

I voluntarily received a copy from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Her Amish Springtime Miracle (Hope's Haven #2) by Winnie Griggs: Review & Giveaway

Her Amish Springtime Miracle JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Her Amish Springtime Miracle by Winnie Griggs, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Her Amish Springtime Miracle
Title: Her Amish Springtime Miracle
Series: Hope's Haven #2
Author: Winnie Griggs
Publisher: Grand Central/Forever
Release Date: May 24, 2022
Genre: Christian Amish Romance

In this delightful and heartwarming novel, an orphaned baby brings together an unlikely couple who learn the true meaning of family.

When Hannah Eicher discovered sweet baby Grace in her barn last spring, the adorable infant seemed like the answer to her prayers. The young Amish baker has always wanted a familye of her own and now that she’s fostered Grace for nearly a year, her adoption application is almost certain to be approved. But an unexpected visitor to Hope’s Haven could change everything…

Englischer paramedic Mike Colder is only returning to his childhood hometown to locate and adopt his late sister’s baby. But when the trail leads to Hannah and Grace, Mike’s determination falters. With Hannah, the simple life he left behind suddenly seems appealing. Despite their wildly different worlds, can Mike and Hannah give each other—and Grace—the greatest gift of all: a life together?

MY THOUGHTS.....

Hannah Eicher knows that she can never bear children, but this doesn't lessen her deep desire to be a mother. And then, she is shown the power of God's intervention when she finds an abandoned baby in her barn, along with these words on a note.

"She comes from Amish roots, and I want her to be raised within the community of Plain people rather than by the Amish."

Suddenly, Hannah is given the joy of loving and caring for a baby and it seems that fostering baby Grace may lead to Hannah becoming her legal mother through adoption. And then....an Englisher comes to Hope's Haven and Hannah's happiness is threatened once again!

This is truly a story of the heart. There are heartwarming scenes of a baby girl thrilled to see her Mamm come in the door and heartbreaking scenes when it appears that she may be taken away. There is Hannah's awareness that her feelings for Mike may be more than friendship and her struggle to remain true to her Amish upbringing. Author Winnie Griggs offers a captivating depiction of Hannah's wide range of emotions, along with her strong trust in God's Plan. Wonderful characters, a sweet romance, and the addition of several surprising twists made this a story that I couldn't put down!

This is the second book in the Hope's Haven series, but I didn't find it necessary to have read the first book. I thoroughly enjoyed Her Amish Springtime Miracle and I recommend it to fans of Amish romance novels.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book that I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
