Foundation of Love (An Amish Legacy Novel, #1) by Amy Clipston

Foundation of Love (An Amish Legacy #1)
ABOUT THE BOOK

Crystal Glick is grateful to live with her brother’s family since her father died and her fiancĂ©, Owen, broke their engagement. Crystal loves her bruderskinner and cheerfully helps her sister-in-law through a difficult pregnancy with babies number seven and eight, but she yearns for a husband and children of her own.

Duane Bontrager is mourning the recent death of his wife, Connie, after twenty-four years of marriage. He and his grown sons have a thriving roofing business but can’t get used to life without her. As the young men prepare to launch out on their own, Duane can’t imagine life alone—nor with anyone but Connie.

When a roofing job at the Glicks introduces Duane and Crystal, they’re attracted in spite of their fourteen-year age difference. But their bishop thinks Duane is better suited for the sweet widow Tricia, and Duane’s sons object to his interest in any woman. Crystal’s family fears losing her indispensable help. If she must go, they’d rather she be reunited with Owen in spite of his betrayal.

They’re the only two who believe they’re a match made in heaven, can Duane and Crystal overcome the obstacles to love?

MY THOUGHTS.....

Foundation of Love is a wonderful story about a friendship that develops between Duane Bontrager and Crystal Glick, and I was rooting for them to find a deeper bond. Duane is just about perfect! He remains devoted to his recently deceased wife, he is trying to be a calming, supportive father for his three grown sons, and he is a hardworking and respected member of his Amish community. Is it any wonder that he might be considered a prime catch?

Crystal is also special, and she's endured tremendous hurts. Her parents are dead, her fiancé walked away, and she's being taken advantage of! I had a time hard with Crystal's brother and sister-in-law, because they seem completely oblivious to the demands that they place on her. Poor Crystal! She loves her nieces and nephews and she's thankful to have a roof over her head but taking care of this family of ten leaves her no time for herself. If she did find a suitor, how would she find the time to court? She hungers to hold her own baby, but what hope is there for a single woman in her thirties?

This is a touching portrayal of how we allow others to cloud our vision and alter our perspective. Everyone believes that two people, fourteen years apart in age, can never find happiness together, and Duane's sons can't imagine another woman taking their mother's place. Clipston proves that the heart knows best and we readers are gifted with a heartwarming story of two people who find romance when they least expect it. We're reminded that love can come at any age, and we should never, ever turn down a chance for happiness. Hope, faith, and trust are woven into Duane and Crystal's sweet romance and I'm truly looking forward to the next Amish Legacy novel!

Strength in the Storm (Johns Mill Amish Romance #2) by Laurel Blount

Strength in the Storm (Johns Mill Amish Romance #2)
ABOUT THE BOOK

In this touching Amish romance, a brokenhearted woman and a steadfast man discover that the safest place to weather tragedy is in each other's arms.

After the murder of both her parents, Emma Hochstedler returns to the small community of Johns Mill, hoping to resume her quiet existence. Reclaiming her place proves harder than expected--especially now that a movie is being made about her family's loss. But then, an old friend offers her a lifeline that gives her new purpose.

Amish builder Samuel Christner is the biggest--and the strongest--man in town. In fact, the gentle giant has only one weakness--Emma. Even though she broke his heart, he won't let his childhood sweetheart face her troubles alone. He hires Emma as a nurse for his elderly aunt...and finds himself falling for her all over again.

But while romance blooms, storm clouds gather. And when darkness falls, it will take all Sam's strength--and all their love--to see them through.

MY THOUGHTS.....

As I read this emotional story, I kept wondering how I would feel and how I would react to the problems facing Emma Hochstedler and Samuel Christner. Would I be as grief-stricken, and feel as guilty, if my parents had been murdered? No, Emma wasn't responsible, but a disturbed Englischer's obsession with her had led to their deaths. Would I be as unsettled, as unsure, about my future? What if I had a chance to help someone that I had loved most of my life? Would I be like Sam, and do whatever I could, until.... I was dealt a blow that might forever change my own future. Would I be too broken, or too proud, to reach out to the love of my life?

Author Laurel Blount has written another powerful story about the people of Johns Mill, and the many storms that they experience. Strength in the Storm is a story of the heart---hearts that ache, hearts that break, and finally, hearts that are healed and restored. Faith, hope, and love are great healers, and Blount shows their effects on these hurting hearts!

Realistic characters, a wonderful setting, and a powerful faith message make this a story to remember. I recommend Strength in the Storm to all who enjoy Amish romance, and I look forward to reading more about the loving and supportive Johns Mill community.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Ivy McKnight experienced great personal growth during the two years that she spent at McCale House in Scotland, but five years later, she's still unsure of her purpose in life. Ivy is given a chance to return to Scotland with her friend Violet Angel, and her life changes again. She enjoys a reunion with Dr. and Mrs. McCale, meets new acquaintances, and connects once again with Jordy McAllen, her former friend who is now a doctor. Jordy is stunned with Ivy's beauty and sees her in an entirely different light, but how will Ivy feel about him?

It was such a treat to reunite with beloved characters Ivy, Violet, and Jordy. Mental health issues continue to be a big part of Beyond Her Calling, and Violet still displays bi-polar behavior, but Ivy's friendship and her strong Christian beliefs are once again like a calming balm for the troubled Violet. Jordy is now a believer also, but his hopes for a future with Amy may be destroyed by a devastating secret that she may not be able to forgive!

If this was being in love with someone---this horrible pain, this guilt, this agony, this feeling of betrayal over sins that were not against her---she wanted none of it. Why? Why had her knight in shining armor turned villain?

Kellyn Roth shares a powerful faith message in this satisfying conclusion of The Chronicles of Alice and Amy. I recommend Beyond Her Calling to all who enjoy Christian romance and Victorian historical fiction.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Ivy Knight is a gentle, sometimes hesitant, young girl who appears to be a little slow, but she would never be considered mentally ill in today's society. This book, however, is set in 1873 England, during an era when mental illness was viewed in a totally different light, and clearly misunderstood. Ivy's parents decide that she would benefit by attending a special school, and author Kellyn Roth offers a touching depiction of Ivy's many emotions. Fear, reluctance, gradual acceptance, and finally, tremendous personal growth during her two years away. Ivy is able to build special friendships, develop a deeper bond with her grandmother Nora, and accept that she is just as God intended her to be.

This is the second book in a series, but I never felt as if I was missing something from not reading the first. Nora Chattoway, Dr. and Mrs. McCale, Jordy, and Violet are memorable characters, and the friendship between Ivy and Violet is a joy to witness. Ivy Introspective does mention some heavy topics, such as depression and thoughts of suicide, but it also carries a powerful faith message, as Ivy shares God's love and Plan of Salvation with Violet.

Ivy Introspective is a heartwarming and thought-provoking account of a young girl's journey to understanding and acceptance. I totally enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to learning more of Ivy's story in Beyond Her Calling, the fourth book in The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy.

Her passion is to inspire her children and all children to celebrate who they are, understand their differences are beautiful, know their diversity is a strength, and believe their voices are should be heard.

Her hero is her late father, Themba Micah Kunene, a man from humble beginnings who worked tirelessly to provide a full life for his eight children. Her father’s unconditional love, wisdom, selflessness, and work ethic inspire the core of Nonku’s principles and life mottos. One of his favorite mottos was "umtsentse uhlaba usamila”, a saying about a strong grass that gets deeply rooted during its early stages of development. The essence of this saying embodies the core of early intervention and teaching young minds early so that they grow up strong and informed about the world. This is what inspires Nonku to write children’s book, to inspire and empower young minds for a greater future.

GUEST POST: Nonku's Thoughts

Behind the scenes: What inspired me to write I Celebrate My Voice

Before I started writing, I didn’t realize how exhilarating it could be.

My journey started from a place of pain and grief. I was looking for answers, and I didn’t have them. I was experiencing the damaging pain of losing my father, and I didn’t know if I would get better. I had to write to express myself and let go of my feelings.

Writing, then, was an outlet for me. It helped me address all the pain I was feeling inside.

All the letters I wrote to myself became my children’s book’s stories. The messages of love and comfort are the tools I hope children will learn early: to love themselves completely and celebrate who they are.

I hope this book will impact these lessons:

  1. To remind families and children about the power of using your voice.

  2. To show the different ways to use our voices in everyday life, by being yourself.

  3. To celebrate and foster individuality.

  4. To foster self-awareness and the strengths our kids have.

  5. To help parents and educators have meaningful and fun conversations about the power of using your voice.

  6. Embrace diversity and show children’s strengths across difference ethnicities, ages, and cultures.

  7. Self-love is golden.

  8. Representation matters. All children deserve to see themselves in books.

  9. We all have a place in this world.

  10. Showing up just the way you are is enough.

This fun, meaningful, and impactful book will transform how we understand our voice and purpose.  Celebrating your voice starts inward... loving yourself just the way you are.

It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. You have a voice, and it matters.
