Embers in the London Sky by Sarah Sundin

Embers in the London Sky
ABOUT THE BOOK

As the German army invades the Netherlands in 1940, Aleida van der Zee Martens escapes to London to wait out the Occupation. Separated from her three-year-old son, Theo, in the process, the young widow desperately searches for her little boy even as she works for an agency responsible for evacuating children to the countryside.

When German bombs set London ablaze, BBC radio correspondent Hugh Collingwood reports on the Blitz, eager to boost morale while walking the fine line between truth and censorship. But the Germans are not the only ones Londoners have to fear as a series of murders flame up amid the ashes.

The deaths hit close to home for Hugh, and Aleida needs his help to locate her missing son. As they work together, they grow closer and closer, both to each other and the answers they seek. But with bombs falling and continued killings, they may be running out of time.

MY THOUGHTS.....

She'd found her son, only to have him ripped from her arms again.
Once. Twice. Thrice

As I read this heartbreaking story, I couldn't help wondering how I would have survived the trauma of being separated from my child, but even worse, losing him during wartime. Would I have been as determined as Aleida or would I have spent my life grieving for the three-year-old who was taken from me? Author Sarah Sundin shares Aleida's emotional journey, beginning in The Netherlands in 1940, and leading her to London as she frantically searches for her little boy Theo. The dangers of WWII are always present, and the heartache never subsides, but Embers in the London Sky has so much more. Friendship, romance, and faith renewed; questions, murder, and the atrocities suffered during this war!

I can always count on the historical gems and the faith nuggets that Sundin weaves into her books. I wasn't aware of the huge number of children who were separated from their families in World War II, and Sundin reminds us that refugees have always been met with resistance! Embers in the London Sky is a soul-searching combination of history, mystery, and faith; and I highly recommend this engrossing story to all who enjoy historical Christian romance.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via Revell Reads. There was no obligation for a positive review.

The Rhythm of Fractured Grace (Sedgwick County Chronicles, 3) by Amanda Wen

The Rhythm of Fractured Grace
ABOUT THE BOOK

Is Siobhan too far gone to respond to the song of a God who's calling her back to him?

When a new customer brings a badly damaged violin into Siobhan Walsh's shop, it is exactly the sort of challenge she craves. The man who brought it in is not. He's too close to the painful past that left her heart and her faith in shambles.

Matt Buchanan has had a rough start as the new worship pastor. A car accident on his way into town left him with a nearly totaled truck, and an heirloom violin in pieces. When he takes it to a repair shop, he's fascinated with the restoration process--and with the edgy, closed-off woman doing the work.
As their friendship deepens and turns into more, they both discover secrets that force them to face past wounds. And the history of the violin reveals more about their current problems than they could have ever expected.

On the nineteenth-century frontier, a gruesome tomahawk attack wiped out most of Deborah Caldwell's family. Her greatest solace after the tragedy is the music from her father's prized violin. Given her horrendous scars, she'd resigned herself to a spinster's life. But Levi Martinson's gentle love starts to chip away at her hardened heart, until devastating details about the attack are revealed, putting their love--and Deborah's shaky faith--to the ultimate test.

Full of forgiveness and the message that no one is too damaged for God's healing touch, the final book in the split-time Sedgwick County Chronicles will thrill fans of Rachel Hauck, Lisa Wingate, and Kristy Cambron.

MY THOUGHTS.....

This story! How can I find the words to describe my thoughts and emotions? Author Amanda Wen shares a stunning depiction of people who've been wounded by someone that they trust, and the steps they take to overcome the hurt and deception. The Rhythm of Fractured Grace is told as a dual-timeline story. One is current day and the other is set in the 1800s, but the common thread that ties them together is a violin. As the contemporary story progresses we learn that Siobhan and Matt have both been deceived by a person they trusted and respected. Will their new friendship be the first step to recovery?

Both timelines in The Rhythm of Fractured Grace are filled with hurt and betrayal, with many of the characters struggling to fully trust again. I found myself turning the pages to see if these hurting people would find healing, peace, and finally, the amazing grace of forgiveness!

Welcome to Crow’s Nest, where danger and romance meet at the water’s edge.

PURCHASE LINKS: Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | BookBub

MY THOUGHTS.....

Danger, suspense, and romance have been key factors in the previous Harbored in Crow's Nest books, and author Danielle Grandinetti continues this winning format in Relying on the Enemy. How far is Gilbert Cox willing to go to atone for his father's sins? Will young widow Marian Ward agree to a marriage of convenience with the son of a man who ruined her family?

This intriguing story, set in Crow's Nest, Wisconsin, is filled with tension and unanswered questions but there are also many moments of grace and forgiveness. Gilbert is immediately drawn to Marion's young daughters, and they are just as taken with him. The circumstances may be unconventional but the budding relationship between these two unselfish people is a joy to behold. If they can only stay safe long enough!

If you enjoy a marriage of convenience trope and historical Christian suspense, you'll want to read Relying on the Enemy. There's also a teaser for the next book in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book that I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Timeless Truths Bible: One faith. Handed down. For all the saints. by Thomas Nelson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Be anchored in the faith “once for all entrusted to the saints” (Jude v. 3) with timeless wisdom shared from church history.

The Christian faith is founded upon unchanging, timeless truth. From the days of the early church until the day of Christ’s return, all of Christianity proclaims that “Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:11). This is our unchanging and unceasing confession upon which all our hope and all our joy rests.

The Timeless Truths Bible will encourage you through the always timely wisdom of those who came before us. Devotional notes and commentary from trusted theologians and pastors from the second century up to the twentieth will stir your affections. The ancient creeds and confessions of the faith will grow your understanding of what we believe—and have always believed. And artwork created throughout the history of Christianity will deepen your worship of the one we call Lord.

Features include:

The complete text of Scripture in the New English Translation

The Lausanne Covenant

Book introductions for every book of the Bible
Full-color tip-in pages of artwork from the history of Christianity
Line-matched, single-column typesetting
Clear and readable 9-point NET Comfort Print

MY THOUGHTS.....

This New English Translation is a balance between a strict word-for-word translation and a paraphrased translation.

This Timeless Truths Bible is written in the New English Translation, so I found it very easy to understand. The font isn't overly large, but I like that the single-column layout and the wide margins offer me ample space for making notes. I appreciate the beautiful artwork and the List of Sacred Artwork that identifies them, and I also like the biographies of 46 key people in Christianity. Some I knew, but many are unfamiliar! There is also a section on Creeds, so I have another learning opportunity here! It follows the regular format of the Old and New Testaments and each of the 66 books has an introduction showing the Author, Audience, Date, Purpose, & Themes. More insights that I may have missed before!

16 beautiful full page paintings and a list of the artists who painted them!

It is imperative to know and understand the basis of our beliefs.
This Bible shares the wisdom of those who came before us!

There are many positive aspects, but I found two that aren't: it's sometimes hard to navigate because there's no general index, and I'm used to seeing the words of Jesus denoted in red ink.

The Timeless Truths Bible by Thomas Nelson focuses on the faith values that have been passed down through generations, so it truly does offer timeless truths. I'm happy to add it to my home library and I consider it a valuable resource to use during my devotion time. It is a great reference Bible!

I received a copy of this Bible for review from FrontGate Media. There was no expectation for a favorable review.

Explosive Reunion (LaMar County Justice, 3) by Dana R. Lynn

Explosive Reunion: LaMar County Justice Book 3
ABOUT THE BOOK

Madelyn Blake has worked hard to get where she is professionally and to be present to her twin daughters. An abusive relationship has taught her to be wary. It has also shaken her trust in God. When she becomes the target of a killer who enjoys using fire and explosives, her entire life is put on hold.

Trevor Stone appears to be a shy, mild-mannered man, but he has seen the worst of people. Still, he retains his unwavering faith that God is in control of everything. As a technician in a bomb squad unit, he has honed his ability to keep calm and clear thinking in life and death situations. When his former best friend is in danger, Trevor puts all his skills to work to keep her and her adorable little girls safe and stop the killer.

As the danger escalates, Maddie and Trevor struggle with their growing feelings for each other while trying to outwit a killer who is always one step ahead of them.

Will they survive and get a second chance at love?

MY THOUGHTS.....

Talk about a strong woman! Madelyn Blake's survived spousal abuse, she's worked hard to become a policewoman, and she's providing a stable home for her twin daughters. It appears that she's capable of handling anything that life throws at her until...a madman targets her as she investigates a case.

The title and cover of this book by Dana R. Lynn are perfect depictions of an event that brings about Maddie and Trevor Stone's reunion. From the beginning, their working partnership is plagued with twists, turns, and a question of survival, but the real conflict appears to be in their personal relationship. If you're looking for a thrilling story filled with danger and suspense but also laced with Lynn's trademark message of faith, grab a copy of Explosive Reunion. You won't be able to put it down.

8 Down (Alaskan Cyber Hunters #2) by Kimberley Woodhouse

8 Down (Alaskan Cyber Hunters #2)
ABOUT THE BOOK

8 bodies down.

8 more lives at stake.

How do you catch a serial killer who attacks through cyberspace?

Investigator Carrie Kintz has been on the job with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation in Anchorage for only a couple of months. But she's already been thrown into the deep there's a serial killer on the loose. Not only is he claiming he's already killed eight people, he's also vowed that eight more lives will be eliminated if demands aren't met. The only clues to help law enforcement stop him are the ones he sends in crossword puzzles across the country--always in the same 8 Down position.

As Carrie works the case, she can't help but feel she's in over her head. And worse, there's signs that the deaths may be part of a frighteningly elaborate cyberattack. But without knowing how the victims are connected, tracking down a killer determined to prove he's smarter than everyone else may be impossible.

With the clock ticking and lives hanging in the balance, Carrie is desperate not to fail and be fired--or worse, to find her faith fading in the face of danger and uncertainty. But when she calls in security specialist Scott Patteson for his expertise on the case, she's suddenly also in danger of losing her heart.

Best-selling author Kimberley Woodhouse's thrilling romantic suspense series continues with this melding of cybercrime and true crime, perfect for fans of Irene Hannon, Lynnette Eason, and Colleen Coble.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Wow! It began with 26 Below and now, there's a thrilling addition to the Alaskan Cyber Hunters series. If you want a heart-pounding race to find a psychotic killer, in a story that will keep you turning the pages, grab a copy of 8 Down NOW!

I'm a long-time fan of her historical fiction novels, but author Kimberley Woodhouse's venture into psychological suspense is extraordinary! I loved the characters, the Alaskan setting, and a peek into the work of both the FBI and the ABI (Alaska Bureau of Investigation). The ticking-clock suspense, the baffling crossword puzzle clues that the serial killer uses to taunt the authorities, and the portrayal of a demented mind are all absolutely chilling!

But wait...there's also sweet romance, a powerful faith message, and a cliffhanger message in the epilogue that promises even more thrills ahead. I recommend 8 Down to all who enjoy inspirational romantic suspense.

MY THOUGHTS.....

Who says an adult can't enjoy a book for young people? I was captivated by this book from the first beautifully illustrated page! A little girl, a general store, the helpful storekeeper, and big jars of hard candy lined up on the counter are the perfect introduction to this story about a seven-year-old girl and her new two-cent coins. I loved learning the history behind these special coins and there's also a wonderful faith message woven into this sweet tale of little Anne watching her older brothers go off to fight in the Civil War. Can her willingness to share her coins with them be enough to bring them home safely? Will the words "In God We Trust" offer them the faith, strength, and encouragement that they need?

The Two-Cent Piece is the first book in Dennis Conrad's "In God We Trust" series and it's a book that can be enjoyed by all ages. The text targets beginning or more advanced readers but younger children will love it also. The illustrations by talented artist Courtney Smith add the perfect touch and reading it as a family offers the perfect opportunity to discuss coin collecting, the Civil War, and the important role that faith and belief in God have played in our country's history. Conrad understands what children enjoy and he's created a series that entertains, educates, and inspires them. I look forward to more books in the 'In God We Trust' series!

The Cowboy's Secret Past (Lazy M Ranch, 3) by Tina Radcliffe

The Cowboy's Secret Past: An Uplifting Inspirational Romance (Lazy M Ranch, 3)
ABOUT THE BOOK

He’s not the same man he was
But maybe now he’s ready to be a father

Since leaving his wild rodeo days behind, rancher Trevor Morgan has sobered up and built a faith-filled life. So he’s shocked when the woman caring for his grandfather intrudes on that solitude. Nurse Hope Burke has hidden motives for coming to the Lazy M Ranch—she believes Trevor is the father of her orphaned nephew. Can a loving aunt and a wary cowboy change a little boy’s life forever?

MY THOUGHTS.....

The Morgan men are back, and I couldn't be happier. I've enjoyed getting to know Gramps, Drew, and Sam Morgan, and now there's one more Morgan to claim my heart! This is a heartwarming story with beloved characters that we've met before, an intriguing secret waiting to be exposed, and an inspiring message of hope and forgiveness. I loved the multi-layered characters, the special Lazy M Ranch setting, and the realistic emotions that supported and strengthened the plot of The Cowboy's Secret Past. Regrets, guilt, and a reluctance to fully trust...haven't we all experienced these feelings?

Author Tina Radcliffe paints a poignant picture of the shifting relationship between Trevor Morgan and Hope Burke, and I dare you not to be moved by a young boy's desire to finally have a home and family. The Cowboy's Secret Past proves what I already knew...you can't go wrong with a Radcliffe book!!

Finally His Bride (Bride Ships: New Voyages #1) by Jody Hedlund

Finally His Bride (Bride Ships: New Voyages #1)
ABOUT THE BOOK

A new world. A new hope. An unexpected love.
What life awaits these brides?

With the cotton mills closed and hunger rampant in Manchester, England, Willow Rhodes’s family encourages her to join the bride ship bound for the Pacific Northwest, where she is assured of employment. Willow agrees to go with the hope that she can
eventually save enough money for her family to join her.

Rebellious knuckle-boxing champion Caleb Edwards loves Willow more than life itself. But Willow has been adamant that she sees him as a friend and nothing more. Unable to watch her sail away, Caleb uses his prize money to pay for passage to Vancouver Island to be with Willow.

After arriving, Willow finds work as a maid and Caleb is a farmhand on the same property. As Caleb struggles to keep his feelings for Willow from growing, he’ll do anything for her, even take the blame for a theft to keep her safe. As the crime catches up to them, they’re forced to make choices that could finally rip them apart forever.

MY THOUGHTS.....

The Bride Ships are back! Author Jody Hedlund has created a set of memorable characters, placed them on a bride ship to Vancouver, and given them an adventure filled with love, longing, and take-your-breath-away romance. As I read this book, I was in awe of the deep friendship shared by Willow Rhodes and Caleb Edwards and equally amazed that Willow didn't know how very much Caleb loved her as a woman! What would it take for her to realize the depth of his devotion?

I fell in love with the original Bride Ships series several years ago, so I was thrilled about this new journey. Hedlund shows the hardships and the mixed emotions of the women traveling from England to a new life in Vancouver. Beautiful scenery, two conflicted souls, and the chance for a new beginning are included but the main ingredient of this story is romance. The sweet but oh-so-tantalizing chemistry between Willow and Caleb that's evolved from their longtime friendship!

This book is perfect for fans of historical fiction and friends to more romance. Grab a copy today and prepare for a fantastic reading experience! Finally His Bride is the first book in Sunrise Publishing's new series, The Bride Ships: New Voyages.
