The Butterfly Box (Miller's Creek 2) by Mindy Steele

The Butterfly Box
ABOUT THE BOOK

When the small town of Miller’s Creek suffers great loss, one band of brothers and a pair of town matchmakers help breathe life back into community.

Penny Lapp thought life was done knocking her down, but when the earth shakes the ground beneath her, she knows life isn’t finished toying with her yet. Everyone she has ever cared for is gone. Now suffering from her own accident while being the sole caregiver to her mother, Penny must find a way to survive the storms God has given her. Giving up would be easier, but when a stranger from the north arrives and refuses to leave, she might just discover she has so much to fight for.

Luke Milford came to Kentucky months ago for his cousin’s funeral. Helping his family with their mounting losses, Luke finds himself drawn to his cousin’s intended. He has never met anyone so fragile, so in need…of him. Penny Lapp needs more than a new roof, and Luke is determined to give her that before he must head back home. What was meant to be simply repaying an old debt for saving his life years ago, has now brought him back to claim what captured his heart.

MY THOUGHTS.....

As I read this, I was struck how the words and actions of others determine how we feel about ourselves. Penny Lapp believes that she is destined to be alone because she thinks that others in Miller's Creek consider her 'plain, pitiful Penny'. Penny, whose brown, beautiful doe eyes have captivated not one, but two young men. Penny, who has faithfully cared for a mother who alters between being mean to totally unaware. Oh, I felt sorry for her, but it wasn't because she was pitiful---it's because she was so oblivious to how special she truly was!

Penny is just one of the many intriguing characters in Mindy Steele's newest book, The Butterfly Box. Luke Milford is quite the hero, as he makes sure that Penny is nurtured physically and emotionally, but this story also has two hilarious matchmakers and a couple of young women who show the powerful effects of gossip, jealousy, and negativity. Luke also has five brothers, and they may prove to be just as amazing as he is. These six brothers, dubbed the 'Milford half dozen', are newcomers to Miller's Creek, and perhaps just what this grieving community needs the most!

Steele has a knack for placing genuine characters into realistic situations, and keeping readers invested until the very end. She paints a vivid picture of a small town reeling from a tragic accident as they work to find a new normal, but she also shares the joy that comes from faith, hope, and a close-knit community. Throw in several budding romances, add a pinch of 'everyday common sense', and mix it with an ample dose of humor, and you have an enjoyable Amish novel that you won't want to put down. I can't say enough good things about this second book in the Miller's Creek series, and I can't wait to see if Lewis Milford gets his own chance to shine in the next book of the series. If you enjoy Christian romance and Amish fiction, you definitely need to read The Butterfly Box!

I received a complimentary copy of this book but there was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
