Osm The Osmium Horned Unicorn

Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically By The Metal Horn Unicorns is a middle grade unicorn-themed book that teaches about 26 elements from the periodic table in alphabetical order. It starts with the letter A for Aluminum which is presented by a magical unicorn elemental named Alumna and ends with the letter Z for Zinc, presented by Dr. Zinko. There are metals and nonmetals throughout the book. Somewhere near the middle of the element pages is a metal horn unicorn named Osm who introduces the metal, Osmium, to readers.

He and about 11 of the other unicorn elementals in the book are characters from one of my previous books titled Journey To Osm – The Blue Unicorn’s Tale. Poor little Osm, known as Blue through most of the story, is different from the other unicorns. While they all have magical metal horns and hooves, loosely based on the real world properties of their metals, he has no metal and no magic. Yet, it was prophesied that he would be the unicorn savior who would save them all from the evil sorcerer, Magh.

Once Blue comes of age, he learns that he does indeed have a magical horn, just like the rest of his tribe and it turns out his powers are stronger and much more special than all the others, too.

In this periodic table book you will learn that Osmium is the densest natural substance in the world, as well as one of the rarest. You would need to mine at least 10,000 tons of platinum in order to yield a cube of sugar worth of osmium! In fact, Osmium is the least abundant stable element in Earth's crust. Even though it is extremely rare, Osmium is not very valuable because it does not have many uses in everyday life.

In the Journey To Osm book, you will read about how a group of metal horn unicorns called The Platinides all help the little blue unicorn achieve his potential. The Platinum group metals (PGE’s) are known as noble metals. They are called noble metals because they don’t easily or ever corrode and are still shiny, even in their natural states. Noble metals are valued for use in jewelry, coinage, electronics, medicine, and chemistry as catalysts. PGEs consist of Rhodium, Ruthenium, Palladium, Platinum, Iridium, and Osmium. When they are alloyed together in Journey To Osm together magical things happen.

In real life, there are not many Osmium alloys, even from the PGEs. Osmium is most commonly alloyed with iridium. In fact, Osmium and iridium mix so well and so easily that they are often found in nature as an alloy. The tips of high-quality fountain pens are made from an alloy of osmium and iridium. This very hard alloy is also used for instrument pivots such as in compasses and in electrical contacts. Osmium-platinum alloy is used to make surgical instruments and pacemakers.  There is even a burgeoning jewelry industry gaining much ground using Osmium crystals which shimmer like blue diamonds.

There are quite a few Osmium compounds in use.  It has successfully been combined with fluorides, chlorides, bromides, iodides, borides, and oxides. Most of these are used for scientific testing and some have great promise as possible anti-cancer drugs. Osmium tetroxide is used for staining biological samples for microscopic examination and for fingerprint detection.

The most interesting use for Osmium was for space mirrors because it has more reflectivity than gold.  Sadly, when actually tested in space, the osmium disappeared in oxidation – it transitioned from a solid to a vapor.

The Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically By The Metal Horn Unicorns has element pages for all the letters in the alphabet plus special pages for alloys and compounds. There’s even a unicorn-themed periodic table! Get the book and related activities to spark an interest in the magic of science in your child.
