While the century began with such promise, it is 1910 when Mira Dean's hopes of being a wife and mother are dashed to pieces. Her fiancé dead from tuberculosis, Mira resigns herself to being a spinster schoolteacher--until Gordon Covington shows up.
No longer the boy she knew from school, Gordon is now a preacher who is full of surprises. First, he asks Mira to come to Sourwood in eastern Kentucky to teach at his mission school. Second, he asks her to marry him. Just like that. And all at once the doors that had seemed firmly shut begin to open, just a crack.
With much trepidation, Mira steps out in faith into a life she never imagined, in a place filled with its own special challenges, to serve a people who will end up becoming the family she always dreamed of.
From the pen of bestselling author Ann H. Gabhart comes a heartwarming story of the unexpected blessings that can come when we dare to follow the Lord's leading.
MY THOUGHTS.....
Never say never! Mira Dean never intended to leave Louisville, she never dreamed of teaching school in a one-room schoolhouse in Eastern Kentucky, and she believed that her chance of being a wife and mother had passed her by, until...a surprise proposal by an old classmate changed her life forever!
Author Ann H. Gabhart has a unique understanding of the life and customs in Eastern Kentucky, and she also instinctively knows what readers want. A beautiful setting, lovable characters, and a realistic plot are all a part of The Song of Sourwood Mountain, but Gabhart delivers so much more! I loved being with Mira, Gordon, Ada June, and the others who lived on Sourwood Mountain. I enjoyed the mountain traditions, the references to those who've "been brought in" from other places, and Mira and Gordon's marriage of convenience. No one deserved to be loved and appreciated more than Reverend Gordon Covington, but I couldn't dislike Mira when she didn't reciprocate his deep devotion. Would she ever be able to love him in the way that he loved her?
I laughed, I cried, and I was completely engaged in this heartwarming story! The Song of Sourwood Mountain is a lovely reminder that romance can blossom at any age, a woman doesn't have to bear a child to experience a mother's love, and God's plans are always best. I highly recommend The Song of Sourwood Mountain!
