MY THOUGHTS.....

Are you a person who likes to give books for holidays? Here's a suggestion if you're looking for a book to add to a child's Easter basket. Bunster, an Easter Story is a sturdy board book that is just the right size for small hands to hold, and the illustrations are outstanding! Little eyes will be immediately drawn to the bright colors, and the pictures perfectly capture the moments when rabbits, ducks, hedgehogs, and a little girl all join together for a fun celebration.

Bunster, an Easter Story is very entertaining, but it can also be educational, and I can see parents reading it, pointing to the pictures, and then having their little ones repeat the names. There's also the theme that friends come in all shapes and sizes, and we don't have to be exactly alike to enjoy friendship with one another. I do, however, have two suggestions for author and illustrator Christine Hwang Panzer. Some of the words in her text are too advanced for her target audience, and children learning to read might not recognize the beautiful cursive text that is used in this story. I offer this as constructive advice, because I do consider this debut book as an enjoyable book for children!

I received a copy of this book from the author via iRead Book Tours. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Guest Post from the Author

Hello, everyone, my name is Christine Panzer and I had the joy of writing and illustrating Bunster, An Easter Story.

In making new friends, Bunster and his gang of ducklings share what they have to make memories with the person whom they have just popped into the life of.

As with my husband and I, we do some of the same with something we both love and share together—a  love for the fun of board games.

I remember the time when I was just trying to keep in touch with one of my only friends in church that hadn’t moved away. I brought my hefty box containing the two-player Yomi card trick game to Starbucks to meet up with a nerdy six-footer called Ian. I ended up sharing something of myself—my aspirations for animation and my admiration of idol artists I had grown up loving in high school. The first board game I had really fallen in love with and put on my Amazon wish list, he had. Little did I know that he was a budding indie board game collector, and I would pretty much enjoy playing all the ones he bought.

Fast forward a year and a half or two and we’re married. During our first December at our apartment, we played a post-apocalypse zombie game called “Dead of Winter, Long Night.” I was delighted by the storytelling that came of it from reading the character cards and the event cards that we happened to choose from the deck as we played. We were lucky and able to fend off the encroaching zombies. It was fun to be able to make memories with my husband in such a way.

Fast forward a few more years, and we have two bright yellow 40th anniversary Ikea Billy bookshelves (that I incidentally found off Nextdoor when we needed to upgrade bookshelves) full of boardgames, many of which have been backed on a crowdfunding site called Kickstarter. Ian and his “I make far too much money” at work. We were able to play a couple sessions for Horizon Zero Dawn the board game and share our love for board games with an older couple that were friends and mentors to us both. The wife exclaimed, to my delight, “I am warrior princess!” as she played as the Carja huntress. Ian as usual, explained the rules, and I was so happy they were able to catch on, play through, and enjoy the process. Cooperative gaming at its best.

So that’s just a little of what I believe is part of the message that I believe my board book, Bunster,An Easter Story brings to the table, if in a somewhat unconventional story.

It’s about bringing yourself to your friends and sharing memories together.

Thank you to Connie for the book review and for inviting me to write a post! Have a wonderful day!
