MY THOUGHTS.....
I missed reading this book when it was first published ten years ago but perhaps I can now have better appreciation for it. Pearl in the Sand is an amazing depiction of God's ability to change a life of despair to one of joy and I am amazed at the author's ability to project what Rahab may have been feeling during her years of being an outcast. Yes, this is biblical fiction but Tessa Afshar has stayed true to the biblical accounts recorded in Joshua, the book of Ruth, and Matthew 1. I found it devastating to read how her mother and father sent Rahab to support their family in a way unimaginable to most parents and their action would haunt Rahab most of her life. I was also deeply touched to watch her growing awareness of a true Abba, a Father in Heaven who loved her like no other, and once she found Him, she never wavered from her course.
Pearl in the Sand is a stunning account of Rahab's path to finding true love with her husband Salmone and her journey from being a zonah (harlot) to becoming a redeemed child of God and part of the lineage of Jesus Christ. Along with this poignantly beautiful narrative, Afshar also includes the thrilling account of Rahab's interaction with the Hebrew spies and her family being spared during the fall of Jericho!
This book is a wonderful testament to God's ability to change the lives of His children and it is a story with compelling characters and the deep spiritual message of hope, healing, and forgiveness. Pearl in the Sand has become one of my all-time favorite reads and I highly recommend it to all who enjoy biblical fiction. I also believe that Rahab's story should be shared with women who have experienced abuse and rejection in their own lives. They need to know that God can heal all of their hurts!
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was absolutely no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Tessa Afshar is the award-winning author of biblical and inspirational historical fiction, including Land of Silence, which won an INSPY Award and was voted by Library Journal as one of the top five Christian fiction titles of 2016; and Harvest of Gold, which won a Christy Award. Tessa was born in the Middle East and lived there for the first fourteen years of her life. She then moved to England, where she survived boarding school for girls and fell in love with Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, before moving to the United States permanently. Her conversion to Christianity in her twenties changed the course of her life forever. Tessa holds a Master of Divinity from Yale, where she was co-chair of the Evangelical Fellowship. She served in women and prayer ministries for twenty years before becoming a full-time writer and speaker. Tessa is a devoted wife and mediocre tomato grower. But that has not cured her from being exceptionally fond of chocolate.
