About Me I am a retired librarian and I now support books and authors through my reviews.

I have always loved to read and I was able to share that love through my work as a public librarian for 22 1/2 years. I now promote literacy by reading, and then writing reviews. I love to support authors by sharing my reviews with others!

Wanda E. Brunstetter's Amish Friends From Scratch Cookbook: A Collection of Over 270 Recipes by Wanda E. Brunstetter

Wanda E. Brunstetter's Amish Friends From Scratch Cookbook: A Collection of Over 270 Recipes for Simple Hearty Meals and MoreABOUT THE BOOK

A must-have cookbook that goes back to the basics of cooking from scratch!

Why does nothing compare to the memories of Great-Grandma’s food? Could it be because she made everything from scratch? Amish and Mennonite cooks contribute recipes that celebrate the value of skipping the factory-made shortcuts and cooking from scratch. Over 270 recipes are organized into traditional categories from main dishes and sides to desserts and snacks. Also included are kitchen tips and stories about growing up around an Amish kitchen. Encased in a lay-flat binding and presented in full color, home cooks of all ages will be delighted to add this cookbook to their collections.

MY THOUGHTS.....

I enjoy cooking and most of my cooking is done "from scratch", so I was especially happy to learn about this new cookbook. Wanda E. Brunstetter has gathered recipes from Amish cooks throughout the country and she shares over 270 recipes in this special collection. Recipes ranging from breakfast foods to desserts, snacks, and candy are listed according to their categories, and there are also two indexes that allow you to search by type or by key ingredients. Many delicious food recipes are given, along with recipes for miscellaneous things, such as window cleaner and weed killer, and there's even a section dedicated to substitutions. No sour cream? Substitute plain yogurt. Need sweetened condensed milk for a spur of the moment dessert? Mix sugar, water, and dry powdered milk together, bring to a boil, and then cook for 20 minutes. Who knew?

I recommend this Amish Friends From Scratch Cookbook to anyone wanting to make good, wholesome meals with ingredients that are readily available in your pantry. The spiral bound softcover allows it to lay flat as you're using it and there are also stories about growing up in an Amish kitchen. This is a cookbook that you'll want to keep, but it would also be a great gift!

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher but I wasn't obligated to post a favorable review.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
