Genre: Historical Suspense/Gothic Romance
She knew the house was keeping secrets. If only the darkness would speak . . .
After her elder brother’s mysterious death, Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible: Mr. Lewis Browning—known by the locals as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new guardian.
Summoned to his reclusive country estate to await her London season, Rebecca plans her own secret investigation among the darkened corridors of the mysterious Greybourne Hall. Yet Lewis Browning is not as she once imagined, and his motivation is horribly unclear. Recurrent nightmares and Rebecca’s restless feelings are further complicated by the shadow of her mother’s prior descent into madness and wondering if she, too, will follow the same heartbreaking path.
Even as midnight rides, strange injuries, and further murders lead back to Mr. Browning, Rebecca can’t ignore the subtle turn of her heart. Has she developed feelings for the man she swore to see hanged? And moreover, can she trust him with her uncertain future.

MY THOUGHTS
Rebecca Hunter has had so much to deal with in the past few years. Her mother's struggle with mental illness and her subsequent death; her brother Jacob's fatal accident that was likely murder; and then, being sent with her Aunt Jo to live with the man that many believe is responsible for Jacob's death.
What follows is a story filled with mystery, intrigue, and the tantalizing start of a romance between Rebecca and her guardian Lewis Browning. The very strong attraction between the two of them soon becomes obvious and their first kiss simply took my breath away!
Set in the Regency era, this book reminds me of the gothic romances by Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart that I fell in love with many years ago. Greybourne Manor with its many rooms and dark passageways; mysterious midnight rides and a hero who has been referred to as the Midnight Devil; and the young heroine who can't determine her true feelings for her guardian.
'Lewis Browning. What was he to me? My guardian? My coconspirator? My brother's murderer? Or something else entirely?'
Midnight on the River Grey is the first book that I've read by Abigail Wilson but it won't be my last. She has proven herself to be a wonderful historical fiction author and I look forward to enjoying more of her books in the future!
A review copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley and via JustRead Publicity Tours. I voluntarily chose to share my review and all views and opinions expressed are my own.
