The Gentleman Spy by Erica Vetsch: Review & Giveaway with "Read with Audra" Book Tour

ABOUT THE BOOK
He only wanted a duchess for a day--but she's determined to make it a marriage for life
When his father and older brother suddenly pass away, the new Duke of Haverly is saddled with a title he never expected to bear. To thwart the plans of his scheming family, the duke impulsively marries a wallflower. After all, she's meek and mild; it should be easy to sequester her in the country and get on with his life--as a secret agent for the Crown.

But his bride has other ideas. She's determined to take her place not only as his duchess but as his wife. As a duchess, she can use her position to help the lowest of society--the women forced into prostitution because they have no skills or hope. Her endeavors are not met favorably in society, nor by her husband who wishes she'd remain in the background as he ordered.

Can the duke succeed in relegating her to the sidelines of his life? When his secrets are threatened with exposure, will his new wife be an asset or a liability?

MY THOUGHTS.....

This book has everything a good Regency novel should have: a dashing hero, a beautiful heroine who is able to stand on her own, and an overbearing and disapproving mother who believes that her son has married beneath his social class. Complications are bound to happen but what if that hero is also a secret spy? Yes, the new Duke of Haverly is a secret agent for the Crown and his decision to take a bride is mainly to protect his true identity from being exposed. Marcus Haverly doesn't need a wife to love, he just needs someone to manage his estate so that he can carry on his secret activities!

This would first appear to be a marriage of convenience story but it doesn't take long for Marcus to realize that he has underestimated the intelligence of Charlotte Tiptree. Charlotte wants to feel valued, something that she never received from her father, and she wants to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than her. Most of all, Lady Charlotte wants her husband to see her as more than a person to take care of his home and wait patiently until he returns. She needs to feel needed and if she can't have a husband who loves her madly, can't she at least have one who is fond of her? But will she still want this if she learns the secret that Marcus is hiding?

As I read this book, I was reminded of the Regency novels that I've read in the past and I truly believe that Erica Vetsch has found the genre that she was meant to write. The Gentleman Spy has intrigue, adventure, memorable characters, and a smoldering attraction that threatens to explode into a heart-pounding romance! This is the second book of the Serendipity and Secrets series and I can't wait to see what Vetsch has planned for the third book that is due in 2021. I certainly recommend The Gentleman Spy to fans of Regency romance and Christian fiction.

I received a complimentary copy as part of the Read with Audra blog tour. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
