A mother’s love is like the air;
you may not see it, but it’s there.
A mother’s love is universal; and yet the way each species shows its love is unique.
In a cloud, I’ll build a nest.
For you, I want the very best.
My love is fierce and very bright.
It makes the world feel safe and right.
Mother’s Love is a lyrical celebration of the unconditional bond every mother has with her child. The book is written from the point of view of ten different animal moms, ranging from elephants to eagles and depicts the various sides of motherhood, including joy, resilience, and sacrifice.
This new children's book focuses on the special love that exists between a mother and her baby, and author Diana Aleksandrova illustrates that a mother's love is a natural, God-given instinct. There are ten different animal moms, along with one human mother, and all of them are shown sharing special moments with their babies.
"A mother's love is like the air; you may not see it, but it's there. This love will always help you through. So smile and say, "I love you, too!"
This is such a special book! The rhyming text is a joy to read, the watercolor illustrations are beautiful to see, and children won't realize that they're learning while they're having fun! Mother's Love is a great learning tool for families, and it would also be perfect for a classroom or school library. I highly recommend it and I can't wait to share it with my seven-year-old "animal lover" granddaughter!
I received this book from the author via iREad Book Tours. There was no obligation for a positive review and these are my own thoughts.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
AUTHOR INTERVIEW
What made you write Mother's Love?
I try to write what I am passionate about. We can all agree that there is no stronger feeling than a mother's love for her child. That has been an inspiration for many poems, songs, books, and movies. It's a universal theme. I wanted to write a book on the subject, but with my personal twist. My love for animals and interest in their behavior presented me with the perfect opportunity to blend both themes. I have always been fascinated with the animals' world and love to read curious facts about the different species. And let's be honest, who doesn't like cute baby animals? I told myself how about writing a book about how animal moms take care of their babies and show their dedication and love. And that is how Mother's Love was born. Mother's Love is a way for a mother to tell her child he is loved through fascinating actual facts for all the different animals featured in the book.
How did you research your book?
In general, I don't particularly enjoy researching for books, but it was a pleasure to do that part of the process this time. I come from a family of animal lovers. I have been obsessed with the animal world since I was a child. We always had cats or dogs in our tiny apartment. And my grandparents had a makeshift farm with chickens, bunnies, sheep, and cows in their backyard. But that was not enough for me. While other kids wanted toys, I begged my mom to buy me books, and most of all, I wanted encyclopedias featuring animals.
I love fun facts about animals, and this book presented me with the perfect opportunity to include some. Writing a lyrical text demonstrating some of the amazing acts animal moms do for their babies was challenging and exciting at the same time. The only problem I had was to decide which information to exclude from the book since the space was limited and there were so many curious facts I wanted to tell kids. But that only gives me the motivation to write more animals books where I can tell the kids all about the amazing animal world.
There are many books out there about animal moms. What makes yours different?
There are a lot of books about mothers, or animals, or animal moms out there. I think what separates mine from the rest is the different approach in presenting the subject.
At first sight, Mother's Love is about the universal theme of all mothers' love for their kids, as the title suggests. But the story, or rather the stories told, are through the unique perspective of each different animal mom featured in the book. All mothers shown in Mother's Love are very different, but they all have their love for their kids in common. Each of them has her exclusive way of taking care of her babies in nature. I used their distinctiveness to make each stand out through a lyrical text showing their love and dedication.
What advice would you give budding writers?
Perfection, if such a thing is even possible, takes practice. To be a writer, you have to be a reader first. Read as many books as you can in the genre you want to write in, but never limit yourself to that. Crossing genres is my favorite way to find inspiration and new ideas. Analyze the books, find out what works for you and what doesn't. I found out that once I started writing, the way I read changed. I still read primarily for pleasure, but once in a while, I stop and analyze the plot twist, the characters, or the author's voice.
My other advice is to write what you are passionate about. That not only makes writing much more fun but also makes your work exceptional. It shows when an author is enthusiastic about the subject she writes about. Mother's Love was so much fun to work on because I am fascinated with animals and compiling fun facts about them to use in the book was more fun than work for me.
Read, write and be passionate!
Born and raised in Bulgaria, Diana Aleksandrova moved across the ocean in pursuit of the American dream, only to realize that her dream was not limited to any one country, or even continent. Rather, it was within her all along.
Diana finds joy in creating stories that make kids of all ages laugh-out-loud, open up their minds and hearts, and let their imaginations run freely.
“Books are our tickets to adventure. They let us explore fascinating places, and join charming heroes, crooked villains, and magical creatures through unforgettable journeys. My job is to create the itinerary.”
