She came to America to escape a workhouse prison, but will the cost of freedom be too high a price to pay?
1933, Wisconsin - Large animal veterinarian Katy Wells takes her patients’ welfare personally, so it’s no surprise when she stands up to angry farmers planning a milk strike or takes in an injured draft horse to save its life. But after a visitor from the past discovers her location and reveals a threat, she must choose between her work and her freedom, and whether to trust a man to keep her safe.
To Stand in the Breach is the prequel novella to A Strike to the Heart.

MY THOUGHTS.....
I truly enjoyed this historical fiction novella that centers around the Magdalene Laundries and the Wisconsin Milk Strike in 1933. Caitlin "Katy" Wells is a veterinarian in Eagle, Wisconsin, and she has a lot to overcome. The farmers are definitely prejudiced because she is a woman, and you can imagine how disrespectful they can be. Katy is also running from secrets from her past and being a young and beautiful unmarried woman in a rural community only adds to her trials. Her life in Eagle would be absolutely horrible if she didn't have the support of her best friend Lily and Lily's twin brother Joey! I especially enjoyed Joey's kind and protective nature, and I found myself rooting for a possible romance between him and Katy!
I've never read anything written by Danielle Grandinetti and To Stand in the Breach is a wonderful introduction to her writing talents. She's created a heroine who is beautiful, courageous, a true advocate for the animals that she treats, and a trailblazer as one of the first female veterinarians in this male-dominated profession. I also loved learning the history behind the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland and the Wisconsin milk strike that occurred in 1933. Grandinetti offers an impressive account of the unrest and violence that threatened Wisconsin during this time, and she offers a stunning portrayal of the farmer's frustration. My husband and I ran a dairy for almost thirty years, so I fully understand the discouragement of watching your livelihood threatened by plummeting milk prices!
To Stand in the Breach has mystery, suspense, romance, and faith, and it's a prequel to A Strike to the Heart, scheduled for release in April 2022. I am looking forward to reading more about Katy and her life in Depression era Wisconsin.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book that was offered by the author. All views expressed are my honest thoughts.
