Magdelena's Choice by Molly Jebber: Review & Giveaway with Celebrate Lit

 About the Book

Magdelena’s Choice

Author: Molly Jebber

Genre: AMISH HISTORICAL ROMANCE

Release date: January 25, 2022

As the daughter of a wealthy rancher, Magdelena Beachy may not truly need her job at the Amish Charm Bakery, but she enjoys tending to customers, be they neighbors or curious Englischers. Only one thing would make life sweeter, and that’s if Toby Schlabach would court her. It’s not just his dimples and smile that warm Magdelena’s heart—she admires his kindness and values. Yet she worries their chance may slip away . . .

With his daed ill and his mother and sister depending on him, Toby can’t yet offer Magdelena the future she deserves. But even as he nears his goal, he learns her father has arranged a match with another suitor. Magdelena risks shunning if she goes against her family. Choosing a path will take courage as well as faith—in God’s plan, and in this steadfast, tender love . . .

MY THOUGHTS.....

Great characters, a 'charming' setting, and strong Amish values are all parts of this latest book in the Amish Charm Bakery series. As we return to the gentle and peaceful Ohio community that we've come to love, it is 1914, and there's mention of the Great War that has just begun. In Charm, however, Magdelena Beachy is preparing for her own battle. She knows in her heart that Toby Schlabach is the perfect man for her, but her father has her future planned, and it doesn't include Toby! What will Magdelena do? Will she be a good Amish daughter and obey her father, or will she risk being shunned by her family and community? Will she choose Toby instead of the man that her father insists that she marry?

Toby is such an endearing character, and you can understand why Magdelena wants him. He is hardworking, loyal, and a devoted son and brother, so you just know that he is perfect husband material. I admired Magdelena's determination and the path that she takes to prove her point, but I was concerned that she wouldn't be able to have the life that she wanted. Toby's widowed sister Rachael becomes her best friend and ally, and Rachael soon becomes involved in her own sad, heartbreaking situation. This is a part of the plot that I would love to see developed, if Jebber decides to add another book to the series.

Jebber is an author who has a unique talent for drawing us in, and keeping us invested, in her stories of faith, hope, and family, but she also makes us think, and she sometimes changes our views. Magdelena's Choice offers the intriguing aspect of an Amish man who desires material possessions, and even values money, and this is an attribute that I don't usually connect with the Amish simple life. This book is a thought-provoking addition to this entertaining series, and there's an added bonus of three of Magdelena's recipes for us to enjoy. If you like historical fiction and Amish romance, you will definitely want to read Magdelina's Choice!

I received a digital copy of this book from the author via Celebrate Lit. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

More from Molly

Magdelena faces difficult decisions when having a difference of opinion with her parents. If she goes against them, she’ll face serious consequences.  Sometimes we have family situations that arise, and they require us to search our heart for how to deal with them. Toby also faces hardship, tragedy, and being judged wrongly by others. Toby and Magdelena are sure God has a plan for their lives, but they’re not sure if they are following his will. They pray for guidance. You’ll enjoy their friends and how they come into play in this story. We all have friends we love, and memories we make with them. They root for us. The same goes for this couple. You’ll wonder what will happen next, and just when you think things are better, something else happens. I hope you enjoy the story.
